They Can’t Have Our Wild Fierce Hearts
The freedom to create is being threatened. (Originally posted on Let the Words Fall Out)
Hello Dissenters,
The piece I’m sharing today was originally posted on my other Stack - Let the Words Fall Out. I’m sharing here because the topic has been on my mind and rather than rewriting it, I’m returning to it and sending your way. Words are my art and my weapon of choice to fight the fascism we now find ourselves mired in. I will not let them take our fierce wild hearts- that is worth fighting for too. May this inspire you to keep going and fight the good fight with your creativity of choice!
Sitting on my couch, scootched all the way into my corner under pillows and blankets, I saw a fellow writer share that she’d just gone to see Wild Robot in the theater with friends and family. She shared how cathartic it was to be together and feel. I watched the trailer and immediately broke down. It felt good to feel something aside from blinding rage.
The beauty in it, the artistry, the messaging, the music, the story.. as I was experiencing and relishing in it, a deep fear set in.
Will they come for the artists?
They are already banning books. I don’t believe it’s that far fetched for them to begin deeming anything they don’t like or agree with as something to be banned.
And that broke me down. The thought of all that we’re losing. The freedom to be ourselves is at stake. The freedom to create is being threatened.
A steely resolve has overtaken me - I will not let them have my wild fierce heart.
They cannot take our words.
They cannot take our paint.
They cannot take our images.
They cannot take our instruments, for anything can make music if whittled the right way.
They cannot take our music.
They cannot take our poetry.
They cannot take our free minds.
They cannot take all of our wild fierce hearts that beat as one.
How is everyone? Please feel free to share. Any trolls will be banned on sight. I so appreciate everyone who has reached out and who stands in solidarity. Sending lots of love and fierceness to each of you. Thank you for being here.
Now, more than ever, women's stories are crucial. I'm so tired of learning everything through the lens of his-story. We need her-stories to inform future generations on how we fought against fascism. I'm happy you reposted this wonderful article Mesa! Let's keep hope alive. XO 🥰❤️
Yes to all this. I sink down many times a day, and then glimmers of light, of hope, like this piece, help me rise up again. It's so hard not to shut down, tho. Thank you. Togetherness.
